Resistance to Militarism in the Pacific
Join us for a powerful learning call with MĀLAMA MĀKUA, a Kanaka Maoli-led nonprofit working to reclaim sacred lands at Mākua from U.S. military control.
This session will explore the intersection of cultural sovereignty, land stewardship, and resistance to militarism in Hawaiʻi and across the Pacific. The presentation will include a 10–15 minute slide overview, followed by open discussion.
Speakers:
· James Sparky Rodrigues – Founding Member, Mālama Mākua
· Lynette Cruz – President, Mālama Mākua Native daughter of Hilo, now in Waiʻanae, Dr. Cruz is a retired anthropology professor and Kupuna-in-Residence at Hawai‘i Pacific University. She is a community organizer and member of the Waiʻanae Moku Kupuna Council, volunteering on projects that connect caring for ʻāina with community well-being.
· M. Kalani Souza – Founding Director, Olohana Foundation A Hawaiian storyteller, musician, poet, and peacemaker, Kalani blends traditional wisdom with modern solutions. As Founding Director of the Olohana Foundation, he works to build community resilience in food, energy, water, and knowledge systems. He is also a member of the Nā Kūpuna Council o Moku ʻo Keawe.
· R. Mahealani “Kumu Ramsay” Taum – Founder & President, LEI of the Pacific A cultural sustainability leader, Kumu Ramsay promotes place-based Hawaiian stewardship locally and globally. He is a sought-after speaker, trainer, and facilitator, and serves on numerous boards while cherishing his roles as son, husband, dad, and friend.
· B. Kainoa Azama – Co-Director, Olohana Foundation A dedicated advocate for Hawaiian sovereignty and environmental protection, Kainoa has led from grassroots to global platforms. He serves as Co-Director of Olohana Foundation and in leadership roles with PRiMO and the RVCC Hawai‘i Hub, earning recognition from the Skoll Foundation and others.
