Building Roots, Resilience, and Response in Crisis | Oct 8, 2025

In recent years, the land that O.K. Farms and the Keolanui ʻOhana leased in the Puʻuʻeo ahupuaʻa was under threat of being sold and repurposed. In 2025, Trust for Public Land, O.K. Farms, and Hawai‘i Land Trust (HILT) came together to permanently protect more than 74 acres of this cherished agricultural ʻāina.

This milestone ensures that the land will continue to provide food for Hawai‘i Island, safeguard the watershed that feeds Wailuku River and Hilo Bay, and stand as a model for community-driven conservation. It is a story of collaboration, cultural connection, and the power of grassroots action to preserve both land and legacy.

Speakers:

  • Troy Keolanui, Co-Founder and Operations Manager of O.K. Farms; Chief Agricultural Manager of the Edmund C. Olson Trust

  • Leslie Uptain, Director of Philanthropy, Trust for Public Land

  • ʻOlu Campbell, President and CEO, Hawai‘i Land Trust

Together, they shared lessons learned, the impact of this conservation achievement, and how philanthropy and community can continue working hand in hand to protect Hawai‘i’s food systems and sacred lands.
